Can't Dim The Light In Lancaster: Hundreds Show Up For Menorah Lighting After Vandalism

The bright lights of Hanukkah were not dimmed this year in Lancaster despite apparent efforts by some to do so.

Hundreds of people turned out in support of Lancaster's Jewish community after a brand new menorah was vandalized.

Hundreds of people turned out Sunday night in support of Lancaster's Jewish community after the menorah in the downtown district was vandalized.

Designed by Mark Joshua Lewin, the custom built, steel menorah weighs nearly 460 pounds and was placed in Penn Square on Friday, Nov. 26, according to Lancaster Online and the Lancaster City Alliance.

It has 18 red roses honoring the City of Lancaster, and the Hebrew word "chai" which means "life."

Sometime overnight -- just hours after the unveiling -- the menorah was vandalized, police said. Some of the arms of the menorah were bent as were some letters in the word "Lancaster," LancasterOnline says.

On Sunday, the first night of Hanukkah, people turned out in droves to support the city's Jewish community.

Anyone with information into the vandalization is urged to contact city police.
